Did you know?
Halloween is a folk tradition of the Anglo-Celtic islands that takes place on October 31, the eve of All Saints' Day. It is named after the contraction of the English All Hallows' Eve which means the eve of All Hallows' Day, which means "the eve of all saints" or "the vigil of All Saints' Day". Halloween has a name of Christian and English origin, but many sources attribute it to the religious festival of Samain, celebrated at the beginning of autumn by the Celts and which was for them a New Year's celebration where the world of the dead met that of the living. They wore scary clothes to ward off evil spirits! Halloween is thus called in Gaelic Oíche Shamhna until today. It is a very popular celebration in Ireland, Scotland and Wales, where several historical testimonies attest to its existence. The pumpkin has become the symbol of Halloween thanks to the Irish legend Jack-o-lantern.
